KANSAS CITY, MO. — The Kansas City Current delivered a statement performance Sunday evening, overcoming an early deficit to defeat the Washington Spirit 2-1 at CPKC Stadium in front of a sold-out crowd of 18,000.
In a matchup featuring two of the National Women's Soccer League's top contenders, Kansas City demonstrated resilience, composure, and timely execution, scoring twice in a five-minute first-half stretch to secure an important home victory.
Washington struck first in the 12th minute when forward Clara Luvanga capitalized on a defensive mistake to put the visitors ahead 1-0.
The Current wasted little time responding.
Just two minutes later, captain Lo'eau LaBonta brought Kansas City level, finding the back of the net in the 14th minute after a scramble inside the penalty area. The equalizer immediately shifted the momentum back toward the home side and energized the CPKC Stadium crowd.
Kansas City completed the turnaround in the 17th minute. Forward Haley Hopkins applied pressure to Washington's back line, forcing a turnover that eventually found its way to midfielder Croix Bethune. Bethune delivered a perfectly timed pass to Vanessa DiBernardo, who finished with a powerful strike to give the Current a 2-1 advantage.
The goal carried additional significance for DiBernardo, marking her first regular-season goal of the 2026 campaign and her 200th regular-season appearance in NWSL history.
Bethune's assist was equally historic. Her 11th assist of the season established a new NWSL single-season record, adding another milestone to an already memorable afternoon for Kansas City.
Defense Delivers When It Matters
While the Current created the separation in the first half, the second half became a test of defensive discipline.
Washington increased its attacking pressure, looking to find an equalizer. The Spirit controlled 61% of possession and finished with 12 shots compared to Kansas City's seven.
However, Kansas City's defensive organization and goalkeeper Lorena's timely interventions prevented Washington from finding another breakthrough.
One of the afternoon's biggest moments came in the 77th minute, when Lorena produced a crucial double-save to deny Washington's attack and preserve the Current's one-goal advantage.
Despite the Spirit's late push, Kansas City remained composed through the closing minutes, protecting its lead until the final whistle.
A Home Field Advantage Like No Other
Sunday's victory represented more than another three points for the Current.
The win extended Kansas City's home unbeaten streak at CPKC Stadium to 32 consecutive regular-season matches, continuing a remarkable run in front of its home supporters.
The Current also recorded its 11th home victory of the season, matching the franchise record established in 2025.
With 18,000 fans in attendance for the club's annual Fan Appreciation Day, the atmosphere provided an appropriate backdrop for a team continuing to establish itself among the league's elite.
Kansas City improved to 15-9-5 on the season, moving back into fourth place in the NWSL standings with 50 points. Washington remained in third place at 52 points.
With the postseason approaching, the victory provided Kansas City with valuable momentum as the club continued its pursuit of home-field advantage.
